DAY 57 OF 365: SPROUTED ALMONDS

So this morning I decided to sprout almonds before heading off to the gym to train with JC. Jessica taught me about sprouted almonds at my last session. Sprouting enlivens the enzymes that are dormant within each almond. These enzymes activate when they come in contact with water (the soaking process), and the nuts are “awakened”. The potential growth for each almond is to become a tree—and when we eat sprouted almonds our bodies receive this concentrated vital energy and nutrition. Sprouted almonds are great in shakes, especially the avocado shake that Jessica taught me how to make. Who would have thought that I would enjoy a shake made with a banana, an avocado, some almond milk and sprouted almonds. If you had handed me the shake without telling me what was in it, I would have thought it was a banana milk shake. This shake is great before heading to the gym or after an extensive workout. So after I started the sprouting process, I headed off to the gym
Today we concentrated on legs. We started out with my normal warm up routine followed my extensive leg exercises. At one point JC had me running and double leg hoping up 2 flights of stairs, timing me of course. By the end of the workout my legs felt like Jell-O and were burning. I have to admit that I really enjoy working out in the morning before heading to work. The gym is quiet and I feel full of energy to conquer the day afterwards. As far as work goes, it was just a normal day of extras casting for Law and Order: SVU. Hard to believe we have only four more episodes before calling it a wrap on season 12. Time really does fly by.
So when I got home I decided to have a pear and arugula salad with low fat raspberry vinaigrette. Quite tasty! I love the peppery flavor of arugula and the sweetness of the pears. After dinner I cleaned and peeled my sprouted almonds. After peeling off the skin, I cleaned the glass jar and placed the sprouted almonds back in and filled with fresh water and placed them in the fridge. Looks like I will be having my banana avocado shake in the morning. Well, I am exhausted and sore from my workout this morning. Time for me to crawl into bed and call it a night. Also, I am planning on posting the chocolate sorbet recipe tomorrow night. Till tomorrow.

DAY 56 OF 365: JUST ANOTHER SUNDAY. OR IS IT?

So Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. But I decided it would be a day to catch up on some household chores, some cooking and of course a trip to the gym. As far as household chores, nothing fun or interesting there. Unless you enjoy laundry and dishes, then it was extremely exciting. Now the cooking part is always fun. My fresh direct order came this morning so I decided to make myself a nice dinner and also some fresh sorbet and lunches for the week. Now I told you about the Chocolate Sorbet that I made two weeks ago. Today I made a mango lime sorbet. My buddy Laurie made it and raved about it so I had to try it out. I love mango and who doesn’t enjoy a little lime in their life. Well, Laurie was right. This sorbet is amazing and not to mention healthier! Below is the recipe. Try it out and let me know what you think. Also, if anyone has any other healthy sorbet or ice cream or dessert recipes, I would love to try them.

Mango Lime Sorbet
4 cups frozen mango chunks
1/2-cup agave nectar
1/4-cup fresh limejuice

Thaw mango chunks for 15 mins. Place in blender or food processor, and puree with agave nectar and limejuice. Transfer to shallow glass or metal bowl, and place in freezer. Freeze 30 mins. Stir puree every 15 mins until ready to serve.
If you have an ice cream machine like I do you can also pour the mixture in there and let that do all the work! Transfer the mixture to small 1/2 cup freezer proof plastic bowls. 1/2 cup serving is 163 calories.

Enjoy!

For dinner I enjoyed some herb marinated chicken along with some sautéed spinach with quinoa, onions and garlic. The perfect side dish with my chicken. I have found that quinoa is the perfect substitute for rice, though I still enjoy some good brown rice!
Now we get to my trip to the gym. I was only going to run on the treadmill for an hour or so since I have a training session with JC Monday morning at 8am. I didn’t want to push myself since I knew that it would be a long workweek as well. So I get to the gym, change; grab my water, iPod and towel and head up to the treadmills. It wasn’t too busy so I decided to grab a treadmill all the way at the other end of the gym where hardly anyone was. Thank god I did! What happens next is right out of a comedy. You know, those blockbuster comedies with a hot leading male and his dorky sidekick that is only there for the comic relief. Can you guess which one I am? Oh, you guys are too sweet but no, I am the geeky best friend. So I am running on the treadmill, picking up some speed and grooving with my iPod. By this time I am sweating and it is dripping down my face. So what do I decide to do. That’s right, grab my towel and wipe the sweat of my face. Well that was a big mistake. I was booking it on the treadmill and when I went to put the towel back on the treadmill it slipped and well, I think you can imagine what happened next. That’s right, just like out of a comedy, the towel fell on the belt of the treadmill, and I stepped and slipped on it and went flying backwards face forward. PLOW, SPLAT, BAM! All the sounds made as I went crumbling down on the treadmill. I literally laid there in disbelief that this had actually just happened. No way, this was a dream. Better yet, no one saw, so just play it cool, get up and act as if nothing happened. Well, it had happened, and people did see and hear it and there was no playing it cool. I wobbled back to the locker room, dressed and went to get a massage because my lower back along with my dignity was hurting. So, what have we learned from this? If you are grabbing for your towel, make sure you put it securely back on the treadmill.
Well, after my massage, I came home and had dinner and sat down to enjoy the Oscars. I am in an Oscar pool and I have a chance to win some amazing prizes. One of which is an Ipad! Fingers crossed. I never win. I am like the Susan Lucci of wining. But, maybe the healthier fitter me is a winner! Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 55 OF 365: NEW BLENDER AND A JUICER

So today was a busy day. I was up at 7am since ADT was coming out to inspect my house and give me an estimate on an alarm system. I have been trying to get a hold of the company that was supposed to handle my alarm system, MS Audio. After months of phone tag and failed attempts I gave up and called ADT. They were here the next day to give me an estimate and installation has already been scheduled. Take that MS Audio! Some bill paying followed that. You have to love payday! As soon as the check is deposited into your account, it is going right out again to pay for bills. Oh did I mention that NY State sent me a letter informing me that there was a mix up in my taxes and that they would not be sending me my $300. Wow, um that sucks. Afterwards I headed into the city to the apple store to see if they could tell me what was wrong with my MAC. Turns out that not only is my warranty up but so is my RAM disk. That’s what is causing issues for my MAC. So looks like I will have to add that to my list of things to do; buy a new RAM disk.
After dealing with some work at the office I headed home to buy a blender and toaster at Bed Bath and Beyond. You would think since I have been in my condo since November that I would own them, but alas, I did not. The great thing about Bed Bath and Beyond is that there are constantly coupons coming in the mail. So with my gift cards and my coupons in hand, I head to Bed Bath and Beyond. There are way too many options to choose from. So after comparing numerous options I chose my Blender and toaster. I noticed that they were having a sale on juicers. My buddy Helene has one and it is the coolest thing. How amazing is it to be able to make your own juice! So I decided to purchase one. It will definitely come in handy with my smoothies and healthy drinks. Well, tomorrow I am planning on hitting the gym in the morning after my fresh direct order arrives. Then it is back home to prepare some meals for the week and make the Mango Lime sorbet. I am also in love with brewing my own tea. It is so easy and much healthier then the powdered ice tea mix. I found this pomegranate tea that I am excited to try out. Till tomorrow.

DAY 54 OF 365: SURVIVED MY FIRST MORNING TRAINING SESSION

So I survived my first early morning training session with JC. I thought that getting up at 6:30am would have been rough; and it was! The hardest part was forcing myself to get out of bed. I had to jump in the shower just to wake up.  I know, taking a shower before working out at the gym sounds crazy, but think of it as more of standing under the shower to wake up. I made sure to have a piece of toast with some almond butter and a glass of milk before making my way to the gym. The session was just like any other. This session was focusing on arms, shoulders and back. The impressive part is that I have being increasing the free weights that I have been using. Like I said, when I started this challenge, I had horrible upper body strength, but in the past two months I have seem a huge difference; for the better!
After the session I showered and got dressed and headed into the office. I felt so awake and full of energy. What a difference working out in the morning. It really is the best way to start the day. I was a little worried that as it got later in the day I might start to crash, but not the case. I made it through my hectic day full of energy! This weekend will be less relaxing for me, but that is ok. I have to work tomorrow since Law and Order: Special Victims Unit is filming and I also have an appointment at the genius bar to check out my MAC and see what is wrong with it. I am hoping they can figure it out and fix it. Also, I have a nice fresh direct order arriving Sunday full of fresh ingredients for the week. I am looking forward to making the fresh mango lime sorbet! Well, busy day tomorrow. Getting up early to get some work done around the house before heading into the city to the Apple Store, then off to the office. I think I might even squeeze in some cardio before heading home. Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 53 OF 365: MORNING WORKOUTS HERE I COME

So tomorrow morning officially starts my first morning session with JC. Now, 8am may not seem that early for a training session, but when you are at the office late at night and then don’t get to bed till about midnight, getting up at 6:30am doesn’t seem that refreshing. I am just praying that I can function during my training. But, I am told that starting off the day with a workout really gets your energy and adrenaline going, not to mention jump starts your metabolism. Now I just need to figure out what to eat before leaving for the gym. JC suggested a glass of milk with some toast and almond butter. I am also thinking that the almond protein shake that Jessica taught me how to make might be a great way to start off the morning before hitting the gym. Now, I just need to buy a blender to make it. I know, I have been living in my new condo since November, but there are still allot of appliances that I still need for the kitchen. One thing at a time though.
Oh, and I got a call this morning from Crate n Barrel that my new chair is ready to be delivered. I am so excited! I cannot wait for it to be delivered and to just relax in it. So I just need to remember to call them and schedule the delivery day and time tomorrow. Well, it is getting late and I need to go to bed. I set the alarm for 6:30am and set the alarm on my phone as well. Would not be good to oversleep on my first morning training session. Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 52 OF 365: SWITCHING FROM NIGHT TO MORNING

So due to my increasingly busy work schedule I am switching to morning sessions before work with JC. That means I will be getting up at 6:30am to be at the gym by 8am. They say that it is actually better to workout in the morning because it increases you energy and also your metabolism for the day. Here’s hoping! I am really not a morning person, and I would much rather be sleeping in then getting up earlier to go to the gym, but the healthier fitter me is going to give it a try. Actually, I am going to have to make it work. Just to give you an idea of my work schedule during pilot season, I am usually at the office by 9/10am and then I am at the office till about 11pm. So adding an early morning training session with JC is probably going to make me one grumpy ass casting director.
Also, this is Day 2 of my MAC being dead. I am scheduling an appointment at the Apple store Saturday. So much for a relaxing weekend at home. Between working on Saturday, a session with Jessica in the afternoon and racing to the Apple store hoping they can cure my sick MAC, I don’t foresee myself relaxing. Oh, and before I forget, I am so excited to try my friend Laurie’s Mango Lime Sorbet. She posted her healthy recipe on her facebook page and I have to try it. It sounds not only healthy, but also delicious.
Before I forget, I had a session with JC tonight and I felt like I held up great. I feel my stamina increasing and I am not getting as winded as I used to get. Now don’t get me wrong, I am excited about that but it only means that JC is going to increase the workouts to push me even more. Well, time for bed. I need to get all the rest I can get because I start my new morning workouts on Friday. Oh, I am sure that when my alarm goes off at 6:30am on Friday I will not be a happy boy. But, no pain no gain and I have to keep reminding myself that this fat ass has to get into shape and recreate that Trevor Donovan photo. Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 51 OF 365: MY MAC HAS DIED

So my MAC has died. Looks like I will be making the trip down to the apple store. Ugh, of course it dies when I am the busiest and have no time to get it fixed. Thank god for my iPhone. Well, I have decided that I want to plan a trip to Ojai, CA for a meditation retreat that includes yoga, meditation and the infamous sweat lodge. Of course the ladies of West Bev went to one of these retreats on a recent episode of 90210. So it is only fitting that I do the same with my 90210 challenge. I think this is an amazing experience and I have always wanted to go to a sweat lodge.
On the work front, I am starting to get busier at the office. Between Law and Order:SVU and prepping the second season of The Big C, not to mention pilot season and feature films, I am finding that I am working more hours, especially at night. It looks like I might have to switch my sessions with JC to the early morning before work. I prefer working out at night, but with my increasing work schedule, I want to make sure that I am staying up on working out. This way, I can start my day off with a full workout, which will probably give me more energy! Well, time to call it a night. I am not feeling great. Coming down with a cold so I need all the rest I can get. Especially since I have a session with JC tomorrow night. Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 50 OF 365: BACK TO THE GRIND

So after an amazing weekend, I am back the grind. I had a blast catching up with my buddy Tarah on Sunday at her 30th Birthday party. I have known Tarah since we were both babies. It just so happens that her mother and my mother were best friends in high school. So needless to say, she is one of my closest friends. We even shared a condo in college.
This week I will be keeping a food diary as part of my homework for Jessica. I just have to remember to write down what I eat. Hmm, I better write myself a note to write down what I eat. Should be interesting. I am also going to apologize now for the short blogs this week. I am having some computer issues. For some reason my computer likes to just shut down. Some internal issues with my MAC. Guess I will be making an appointment this week with the apple store. Until then, it will be quick typing and publishing before my computer turns itself off. Well, time for me to call it a night. Just got back from a session with JC and I am exhausted. Plus it is going to be a busy week at the office. Till tomorrow.

DAY 48 & 49 OF 365: MINI GETAWAY

So I am taking a mini trip down to South Jersey to celebrate one of my best friend's 30th birthday. I have basically known her since I was in diapers. I will be back on Monday and I will fill you all in on my mini getaway. Don't worry though, I will still be
eating healthy. Besides, if I don't I will have to answer to JC and Jessica! Well, have a great weekend and I will be back blogging on Monday. Till then.

DAY 47 OF 365: THE PANTS ARE STARTING TO SAG!

It finally happened. I put on a pair of my jeans, which are normally cutting off my circulation in my waist and they not only fit comfortably, but also get this; they were sagging! That’s right ladies and gentlemen, after 47 days of eating healthy and working out I am finally seeing results. Now I know that people have been commenting on the fact that I look like I have lost weight and look younger, but I just wasn’t seeing it. But now, I have tangible proof that this challenge is working. The exciting part is that this is only Day 47! Can you imagine what I am going to look like on Day 100? The best motivation, at least for me, is to see results. It’s what drives me during this challenge. Monday for the first time I felt drained and defeated. JC kicked my ass and I failed! But, as JC says, in order to succeed you first need to fail. I think that applies to life in general. It takes total failure for you to pick yourself up, dust off and get the fuck up and push yourself to succeed. I am 30 years old and I am finally getting the courage and strength to go after what I want in life. It is never too late. Hell, I am still young!
So we are going into pilot season when all the networks order new shows to test out for the fall. This is usually my busiest time since most networks order anywhere from 10 to 20 new pilots. I am wrapping up season 12 of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and preparing to start filming of season 2 of The Big C. Not to mention that this spring seems to be bringing in feature films left and right. So, I am sure that I will busy. The true test that I mentioned before will be balancing work, eating healthy and working out. I think that I am up for this challenge. Especially since I will be heading out west to the land of the angels. That’s right, I am heading out to LA in May for work. But that doesn’t mean I won’t be having some fun on my free time when I am out there. I will have plenty of time to hit the beach and pool, so I need to look good. So no slacking on my part. Busy with work or not, I need to stay on top of this challenge and keep course for my goal! Remember, I still need to recreate that photo at the end of the year. I should really research the photographer of the original and see if he would be up for taking my photo. Could be interesting. Maybe Trevor would be up for giving me a posing lesson. Hmm, just a thought.
Well off to bed. I am exhausted. I had a tense workout tonight and a busy day at the office. I am ready to crash! Till tomorrow.

Thursday, February 17, 2011

DAY 46 OF 365: NOTHING LIKE A HOME COOKED MEAL

There is something to be said about cooking a home cooked meal. I came home today from a busy and stressful day at the office and prepared a nice dinner for myself. I grilled some chicken and seasoned it with some sea salt, pepper, and a little basil. I also sautéed some broccoli that I chopped up in some extra virgin olive oil with some herbs and grilled some asparagus with lemon. Of course I made extra for lunch and dinner tomorrow. Left over’s are the best!
I was still sore today from my workout yesterday. I am even starting to feel it in my chest. I’m realizing that I slouched allot, because ever since I started working out I have noticed that I stand straight with my chest out. Very macho looking! Tomorrow we will be working on abs and arms; the two areas that I feel need the most work. I have noticed that I am starting to gain more upper body strength, but I still have a long way to go. As far as my abs and chest, well, lets just say they are a work in progress. Time for me to do some laundry and dishes before heading to bed. I know, so exciting. What can I say, I lead a thrilling life. Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 45 OF 365: IS IT THE WEEKEND YET?

This week has been hectic with work and then the gym. I am actually fading as I type. I had another intense workout with JC. We worked allot of upper body today and he plans on working the core, abs and arms on Friday. JC said the warm up is over, now it's time for the training! What the hell? I thought we were training. Well, either way I am ready for the challenge. However, right now I am ready for bed. I have to get up early tomorrow for a production meeting for the next episode of Law and Order: SVU. In other news, The Big C starts filming again in March so I am going to be busy at work again. That will be interesting since I will have to juggle two shows while also staying on top of my challenge. I can't lose sight of my goal. I am motivated and dedicated to a healthier fitter me! Well, time for bed. Till tomorrow.

DAY 44 OF 365: PAIN ALL OVER

There are no words to describe the pain that I am in right now. This was the most intense workout to date with JC. In an hours time I did pull-ups (3 sets), pulled and pushed weights across the gym (3 sets), pulled and pushed a sled with weight on it across the gym (3 sets), and worked my biceps (3 sets). By the end of my hour I collapsed on the massage table where I normally stretch out. I was drowning in my own sweat. JC informed me that we have moved to the next level of my training. This part was designed to increase my metabolism so that I would be burning fat for the next 36 hours. Hell, I will be lucky if I can get out of bed in the next 8 hours. My legs were actually shaking on the walk home. But I guess that is why I am working so hard. I need to look at the greater picture; a healthier, fitter me.
On the nutrition front, Jessica has me keeping a breakfast journal this week. Each morning she has me trying a different breakfast to see how it affects my energy level and how it makes me feel. It is a way for me to understand how eating certain things affect my body. Next week I will actually be doing a food journal. That should be interesting. I never was good at note taking, especially about what I eat during the day. But, I guess in order to better understand nutrition and my eating habitats, I will have to. Well, I am off to bed. My body is sore and I am exhausted after that workout. Till tomorrow.

DAY 43 OF 365: HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

There is something to be said about Valentine’s Day. Mine actually started out on a good note. I had my taxes done today. I sure that is not how most people spend Valentine’s Day, but it had to be done. Oddly enough, Uncle Sam was the perfect date. He didn’t say much, didn’t order for me. And after our date gave me an amazing gift. I might just ask him out again next Valentine’s Day.
So after finishing up with the accountant I headed into the office where I was surrounded by chocolates, cookies, banana pudding and sweets. I mean it is Valentine’s Day so I am not surprised. I must be honest and let you know that I did treat myself and I enjoyed a small portion of Banana Pudding, one cookie and a bite size Hershey’s dark chocolate. Every once in a while you have to treat yourself and I have been working hard. Besides, I don’t want to deprive myself of treats such as these, especially if that could lead to a possible binge. Jessica did say that you could treat yourself to things, especially since they are not part of my everyday diet.
Also, today was the first time that I really noticed a change in how my clothes are fitting me. My pants are actually a little loose. That was an exciting moment especially since lately, my pants have been on the tighter size in the waist. I also bought some new running shoes for the gym since my other sneakers were getting worn down. Well, off to bed. Busy day tomorrow casting extras and prepping my next episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Hard to believe that this is my 6th season as the extras casting director on the show. Time really does fly. Till tomorrow.

DAY 42 OF 365: WEEKEND, WHERE DID YOU GO?

How is it that the older we get, the quicker the days go? If I sneeze I might just lose a day. Any more, the weekends just fly by and by the time I fully recharge and feel relaxed enough to enjoy the weekend, it’s Monday. Now, I did accomplish allot this weekend including a session with Jessica, some grocery shopping, bill paying, tax preparation, cleaning, laundry and some cooking. But now that I think about, what did I do that was fun? On 90210, the ladies of West Bev went to a yoga retreat to Ojai. On The Vampire Diaries, Stephan and Elena went up to her families cabin for a relaxing getaway. Me, I retreat to the TV to be a third wheel on these adventures, living vicariously through fake characters. My point is, Life is too short and there is so much out there to explore. The more I work out and eat healthy, the more energy I have to do more. I want this dreadful winter to be over so that I can enjoy the great outdoors. At the Chelsea Piers, where we film the Law and Orders, there is this rock climbing facility that I am dying to try out. Not to mention the traipse on the Hudson River. Remember that episode of Sex and the City where Carrie had to get over her fear and do the traipse? Well that's me. My sister along with my Aunts and Uncle went skydiving. That’s right, they jumped out of a plane with a parachute. How cool would that be? All things that I normally wouldn’t have thought about trying, but because of working out and eating healthy, I am starting to see just how fun they can be. Well maybe not how fun they could be, but more like life is short. Why not make the most out of it! I don’t want to look back on my life and wonder what if. I want to look back and say, yes I did that. Growing up I had so many dreams and aspirations, some of which I went after, others I just let fade away. Its time that I went after what I want in life and not to let anything stand in my way. The point is, I have never felt better. I wake up every morning excited for what the day holds. I still have days that I don’t want to get out of bed and don’t want to go to work. But I am human. There would be something wrong with me if I didn’t. So if you take anything away from this entry, it should be this. Live life to the fullest for YOU! Don’t live it for others, or your kids or your parents. Well, I have to go to bed. I have a date tomorrow with Uncle Sam. Let’s hope that this Valentine’s day he is in a giving mood. Till tomorrow.

DAY 41 OF 365: NON STOP, ON THE MOVE

Today was a busy day from the moment I got up. From getting all my documents in order for my taxes, to grocery shopping and over due errands and work, it was a non-stop day. I also had a session with Jessica, who by the way introduced me to a new shake that I might not have tried otherwise. It is a shake made with almond milk, a banana, an avocado and sprouted almonds with a dash of maple syrup. Yes, you heard me right. All of those ingredients blended together for a healthy shake that I actually enjoyed. It tasted like a milk shake and if you would have told me what was in it I would never have believed you. Jessica also gave me breakfast homework. What I have to do is for one week, try different things on a list that she gave me for breakfast and see how I feel during the day. It is to show how different foods affect you. I will also be keeping a food journal for her as well. By the way, I made some sautéed spinach tonight with my grilled chicken that was so tasty. Who knew sautéing it up with just a little oil, sea salt and lemon would be so tasty.
Tomorrow I am planning on purchasing some new running shoes to workout in as my old ones are starting to fall apart. Also planning on some cardio at the gym and possibly a class or two. Then back home to prepare for doing my taxes on Monday. Here is hoping that Uncle Sam is in a giving mood on Valentine’s Day. Fingers Crossed. Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 40 OF 365: TGIF

I am so sore. I had a great workout with JC this evening. The only down fall is that my entire body feels as if it was just put through the ringer. Every inch of my body hurts, but that means that I am working hard. We did allot of legwork and then also upper body. I have to admit that I am getting better at push-ups and pull-ups. Now that’s not to say that I am hitting them out of the park, but it’s allot better then when I first started and could barely do one. JC was telling me that that the average man can only do one pull up. He says that free weight workouts are the hardest because it is full muscle control. He then turned to me and said that if he ever brings me to a room with no machines or weights that I should be scared.
Looking forward to a nice weekend after a long workweek. Other than a session on Saturday with Jessica, I have no plans at all. I am actually looking forward to taking it easy. Maybe a bit of cardio Saturday and Sunday but I am also looking forward to trying out a few recipes, especially a stir-fry recipe that I found. Well, off to bed. I want to get a good night sleep so that I am rested for tomorrow.  Till tomorrow.

DAY 39 OF 365: JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS.

So today was just one of those days where all I wanted to do was stay in bed and sleep. It has been a busy week at work with Law and Order: SVU and then also with working out at the gym. I am sore all over and actually for the first time in awhile I feel exhausted. I had to be on set this morning and it was actually a chore to get out of bed. It was so comfy and warm in my bed that I had no desire to get out and make my way to the shower. I kept hitting the snooze button. But eventually I got up, showered and headed over to set to check in the background.
The day went by quickly and before I knew it I was heading home and making myself some dinner. I actually made a simple dinner since I had a large breakfast and lunch. So I had a light tuna salad sandwich with some sautéed asparagus. I sautéed it with fresh lemon and extra virgin olive oil and seasoned it with sea salt and pepper. Just what I needed. The perfect ending to a long day. I will be heading to set again tomorrow morning also. Here is hoping it will be easier to get out of bed; I doubt it. Well, the weekend is almost here. Another session with Jessica on Saturday and then some much needed cardio at the gym. I need to get my body to the point where I can workout everyday. Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 38 OF 365: WHO ORDERED THE JELLO?

My entire body feels like a pile of Jell-O. I had a hard workout today with JC that not only worked my lower body but also my upper body. It’s times like these that I realize just how out of shape I am. JC says that my stamina is increasing which is great, but afterwards I just want to crawl into the fetal position and rock myself to bed. But, I have a goal and a deadline so I have to keep on track. Now I workout with JC three times a week and then I try and workout by myself at leaset 2 to 3 times a week. So if you do your math that is about five to six times a week. I read an article that Trevor Donovan, the 90210 star who inspired this challenge works out everyday! Holy crap. So I have decided that my mini goal for the next month will be to workout everyday for at least an hour. It will help when it gets warmer outside and all of this snow and ice is gone. I would love to go for a run or even a jog on the weekends. It's nice to just get out and enjoy the fresh air. Now, when the wind is blowing in your face and it is 20 degrees out, you tend to not want to be outside let alone going for a run. So here is hoping that spring will show itself. Well, I need to go to bed. I have to be up early tomorrow morning and on set for Law and Order: SVU. Looking forward to going to set and checking in the background. It is always fun to go to set and watch as the scripts come to life. That’s the best part of the job. Till tomorrow.

DAY 37 OF 365: A NIGHT IN PARIS

Ok so I didn’t spend a night in Paris, nor did I watch the porn she made with her ex boyfriend. I did however have a bonvoyage dinner at Madame Claude’s tonight in Jersey City. The food was impeccable, the atmosphere entrancing and the company even better. The French know how to cook and enjoy food.
A group of us decided to have one last dinner together before our buddy set course for Los Angeles, joining his wife in the warm weather and sunny beaches. Hmm, sounds like a scene out of 90210. Ok, I digress, back to Paris. We enjoyed a nice bottle of wine and I started out with a bowl of vegetarian non-dairy butternut squash soup. Now, I have never tried this before so I have nothing to compare it to, but my god was it delicious. There was so much going on in that bowl that the only way to describe it would be to say that a firework of tastes exploded in my mouth. See, there I go again. My taste buds have really been expanding their horizons, leading me to believe that I have taken food for granted. Well, not anymore! For dinner I enjoyed a nice hanger steak with a peppercorn sauce. Now, I know steak isn’t great for you, but seeing as I hardly ever order it and never cook it myself, I decided to treat myself. The meat was so tender and it melted in my mouth. I also enjoyed a side of ratatouille. Now I am a huge fan of the movie, and I am proud to say that I have seen it over five times and I could see it five more times. Even after seeing the film I still had no idea what ratatouille was or what was even in it. So when I saw it on the table I had to try it! It was amazing. It was like being at home and every memory that you have of home cooked meals was in that bowl of pleasure. That scene at the end of the film when the evil critic tries the ratatouille was what I felt. It was like I was transported back in time. I felt happy and at peace. Well, dinner was over and I had to order dessert. I mean this was Marcus' “Last Supper” with the Jersey City gang. So I ordered the apple tart crepe. Heavenly is what it was. I didn’t finish it but it was a perfect way to end the meal. Now I am sure you must be saying, “well Dave, that didn’t sound healthy”. I know, but I don’t eat like that everyday and it was a special occasion. The fact is that I have been working hard for over a month now, and it was time to treat myself. A reward for all the hard work I have been doing. And it wasn’t all bad for me and I didn’t over eat; which was a problem that I used to have.
So after dinner we all said our goodbyes and headed home. I am still sore from Monday night’s workout but I am eager to get back to the gym and work off all the amazing food I ate tonight. I am sure JC will put me through the ringer tomorrow. He always does. It’s weird to think that Marcus and Diane are gone. I am sure that they will be back for visits and that I will go out to LA and visit also, but they are no longer a couple of blocks away. We all won’t be getting together for drinks or dinner. It’s sad, but I wish them the best. Well, off to bed. Busy day tomorrow.

DAY 36 OF 365: IT'S MONDAY ALREADY!

There’s something about Monday’s that scare me. You never know if it will be a good day or the start of the workweek from hell. I find that I start counting down till Monday on Sunday afternoon. I can be with a group of friends having a great time and still be checking out the clock counting the hours until the end of the day. It is the worst feeling. But whether it was a great day or the start to a crappy week, I knew I would be eating well.
For anyone wondering, I tried the chocolate sorbet that I made and you would never have known that that scoop of chocolate magic was in fact a healthy snack. I can’t wait to try the other sorbet recipes that Jessica sent me. On that note, I am meeting with Jessica again this Saturday. I was skeptical in the beginning about hiring a nutritionist. Let’s face it, when you have been eating the same way for 30 years, it can be hard to just change that routine. But Jessica has been amazing with introducing things slowly while explaining why these foods are beneficial for me. I am looking forward to her coming over to my place and helping me organize my kitchen to make it easier to cook it. I mean, I am a guy and a bachelor at that. I tend to just put things anywhere. Sometimes I will put groceries away and forget about them. So having someone help me organize the kitchen will be a huge help. Not to mention private cooking lessons in my kitchen. Money well spent!
One last thing. So I started this challenge by watching an episode of the CW’s 90210. I have now started to actually enjoy the show. It could also be the fact that I like seeing sunny weather and warm beaches. But either way, it gets 2 thumbs up for me. Now, if only I can convince the producers that I would make a great TA for next season when the kids of West Bev head off to college. A guy can dream, can’t he?
Well, time to sign off and head to bed. It is a busy workweek and I am sore from working out with JC tonight. Till tomorrow.

DAY 35 OF 365: FUN IN THE KITCHEN

So today I went grocery shopping and stocked up on food for the week. I like to prepare allot of food Sunday night and pack it all up for lunches and dinners for the workweek. It saves money that I would normally spend on lunches and dinners but it also assures that I eat healthy. This weeks menu includes, Turkey Quinoa Chili, Grilled chicken for salads and sandwiches, some tuna on whole-wheat wraps, and don’t forget the healthy homemade chocolate sorbet. I also bought the usual like fruits, vegetables and leafy greens. I am planning on spicing up my salads with some nuts and brown rice. I have also found that putting apples and pears in my salads adds some natural sweetness and an interesting texture.
I am excited about the Chocolate Sorbet. I asked Jessica for a healthier recipe since I love ice cream. She gave me a couple of recipes including pineapple sorbet and also Mexican mango sorbet.
On another note, I am actually enjoying the updated 92010. It has been added to my DVR. I joked with my buddy Helene that maybe next season since they are going off to college that I could play a TA and she could play a professor. What do you think? I think we need to start working on that campaign! Haha I am only half serious, leaning more towards the serious. Hey, I think I could pull it off.

Below is the recipe for the Turkey Quinoa Chili. Let me know what you think. I found it at eating well living thin. Great site if you are looking for some healthy recipes.

1/3-cup quinoa

2/3-cup water

2 tablespoon olive oil

1 large onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 orange bell pepper, chopped

1 zucchini, chopped

1-pound ground turkey

1/2-teaspoon cinnamon

1-tablespoon cumin

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder

One 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes

One 15 ounce can chicken broth

One 15 ounce cans black beans, drained and rinsed

One 15 ounce can red beans, drained and rinsed

In a small saucepan bring 2/3 cup water to boil; add quinoa, reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until quinoa is tender and all water is absorbed. (The little ‘tail’ should be showing on each grain.) Set aside.

In a large stockpot heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic until soft. Stir in zucchini and pepper and cook for 5 minutes. Add ground turkey and break up into chunks. Cook until no longer pink, but not cooked completely through.

Stir in cinnamon, chili powder, cumin, chili powder/mix, oregano, cocoa powder, chipotle pepper, tomatoes, chicken broth, and beans; simmer for 20 minutes.

Add the quinoa and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Makes 10 servings, about 1 cup each.

DAY 34 OF 365: NOT HOW I PLANNED THE DAY TO GO

So today did not turn out how I planned. I was hoping to have had a fresh direct order delivered today, but unfortunately I was late in ordering, and alas, there were no more delivery times available. Even on Sunday! Hmm, maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Super Bowl is Sunday. So, I thought that I could walk to the super market, but the skies opened up and it started to rain. So, walking was out of the question.
I also over slept today. I had set my alarm for 9am but when I rolled over this morning, the clock read 11:10am. Wow, did I actually hit the alarm and go back to bed? Yes I did. I guess I was exhausted from my busy workweek and workouts.
So, I decided that I would at least try and be productive so I did some laundry and dishes and paid some bills. I know, so exciting. But in my defense it was rainy and miserable out. I was going to attempt to go to the gym but after last night’s workout, I was sore all over. So I am planning on getting up tomorrow morning and hitting the gym first thing. That way, I can start my day fresh and energized. Well, till tomorrow.

DAY 33 OF 365: LONG DAY MEANS I FORGOT TO BLOG

So yesterday was a long day followed by an exhausting workout with JC. I informed him that I was still sore in the legs from our last workout so we worked the upper body. But not before we did our usual warm up routine to “ease the legs”. Well there was nothing at ease about that warm-up, but I guess that is best because I don’t want to take it easy on my body. I want to wake it up and whip it into shape. That’s the only way I am going to achieve my goal and get back into shape. And of course grab the attention of the producers of 90210! OK, maybe that last part was a little far fetched, but one can dream.
So after the workout I waddled down to my buddies Helene and Scott to visit with them and their buddy Natasha. We listened to music and got caught up and just laughed. Oh and Helene made me an incredible drink consisting of pineapple, blue berries, ice, whey protein, beet juice and kale juice. It was amazing. Something I am sure a year ago that me and my body would have rejected. I can’t wait to have another. Anyway, I looked at the clock and it was 1am, so we said our goodbyes and I headed home. I walked in the door, took out my contacts and passed out. Thus, the reason for the late blog. So I am sorry about that. But, today I am going grocery shopping so that I can make some Turkey Quinoa Chili and some healthy Chocolate Sorbet. I will let you know how they turn out. Well, enjoy the day and get yourself to the gym. I know I will. Hey, maybe even take a class.

DAY 32 OF 365: A WHOLE LOT OF CRAZY!

So today started out like any other day in the office. However, it quickly took a turn for the worst. Now everyone knows that I am an extras casting director. So I deal with actors on a daily basis. Today I was informed that there was a Facebook page called “NYC’s list for Crooked Casting Directors” and that the creator of this site was sending out messages slandering my name and the name of the company that I work for. The creator and author of these lovely messages is called unemployedactor smith. So basically a coward sticking with an anonymous name. How poetic. What’s amazing is that this individual is saying that I accepted thousands of dollars at my 80s prom party that I threw for my 30th birthday. Interesting enough, the only people in attendance at my 30th were my family, friends, and co-workers. No extras we invited nor were in attendance. As far as accepting thousands of dollars at my 30th, well, the only money passed at that party was my credit card to the bartender when I paid for the bill. The only person who paid for that party was myself. I should know since I had to pay the fairly large credit card bill. Then this pathetic individual talks about taking bribes and that is how I was able to pay for my luxurious townhouse. Well, I can tell this idiot is not a reporter, because if he/she were he/she would have checked their facts. I have worked my entire life since the age of ten, and I saved and worked for every penny that paid for this “Luxurious” townhouse. Also a fact that this individual didn’t check; it’s a condo moron, not a townhouse. It saddens me that such stupidity and hatred exists in this world. Individuals like this are who give human beings and actors a bad name. What this actor does not realize is that I do not work for him/her. I work for the studio/production company that hires me. It is not my job to make sure that every actor in the tri-state area is working everyday. It is my job to make sure that the look of the project that I am casting is to the liking of not only the studio that hired me but also the director. I am not a temp agency nor am I an employment office. I am a casting director. I also don’t hide behind lies and an anonymous name as this actor. I stand in front of the truth. I hope that true actors will realize the hatred involved in such a Facebook page and put an end to it. What this individual failed to realize is that in this day and age with technology, IT guys can find out anything from an ip address. If caught, this individual could face court time and fines for slander. I am a true believer in karma. They will get theirs in the end.
On a more positive note, I had a healthy lunch and dinner. I felt that I had to add that in since I spent the entire time venting about a crazy actor. Well, here is hoping that Friday is less crazy and that Facebook takes down this page. Till tomorrow.

DAY 31 OF 365: I HAVE HEARD OF "THE BALL AND CHAINS" BUT THIS

So today’s workout was brutal. It was a total body workout that had me screaming in pain. We started out with my normal warm up which I have gotten extremely good at. So what happens when you accelerate in class? They give you something harder. So JC had me shuffle back and forth in a squat position between cones while he threw a football at me, which I had to catch and through back, while I shuffle. Then if that wasn’t bad enough I had to do the bear crawl between the cones, and when he yelled ball, I had to get up, catch the football, shuffle back to the cone and throw it back to him. Then I bear crawled back to the cone and started it all over again. Now, that would have been enough for me; not JC. He had me pull weights with a chain across the room. I did lunges while pulling it one way and then pulled it backwards in the squat position. Well by the end of my set my legs were shaking and felt as if they were on fire. This was the first time since I started this challenge that I actually felt defeated and like I wanted to give up. JC, however, pushed and kept me focused on the goal; an athletic lean LA body fit for 90210. So I got back on track and pushed through the pain. Afterwards, we worked the arms for a bit before stretching and calling it a night.
I should let you know that I survived the ice storm today. I usually fall on my ass, as I am one of the most uncoordinated people out there. However, I caught myself numerous times without falling, in part due to the working out that I have done. Quite the accomplishment if I don’t say so myself. Something else exiting is that Punxsutawney Phil, aka the Groundhog Day mascot, did not see his shadow, which signals an early spring is on the way. One can hope, right? Well off to bed. I am sore and in pain and hoping that I will have a restful night. I am sure that I will wake up to tight leg muscles and pain. But no pain no gain!

DAY 30 OF 365: JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS

So I had every intention of getting up this morning and going to the gym for some cardio before heading into the office. However, my legs had something else in mind. After last night’s intense workout with JC, my legs were sore, but when I got up this morning, they were sore and tight. I ended up spending about 30 minutes just stretching out. So my cardio workout was postponed until this evening. Walking to the PATH train I must have looked like a penguin waddling down the stairs. Once at the office, it was just a normal day of extras casting. Tonight I did an hour of cardio on the treadmill. I kept a nice pace up increasing the speed and then decreasing to keep my heart rate up and in turn burn more fat. I didn’t push the workout tonight since I will be meeting with JC tomorrow night after work. I am sure he will put me through the ringer. That’s ok though because I have noticed that my endurance during the workout has increased and I don’t tire as quickly as I used to. Now, JC still pushes me to the point where I feel like I am going to collapse, but I have noticed that I last longer. Go me!
I found a Turkey Quinoa Chili recipe that I am excited to try out this weekend. I am a huge fan of chili but I am looking for a healthier version and I think that I might have found it. I am going to send the recipe to Jessica tomorrow morning and see what she thinks about. I am also excited because Jessica is sending me a recipe for healthy fruit sorbet.
Well off to bed. Busy day tomorrow and an ice storm is headed our way. Who’s excited about that? I know I am. What’s more fun than slipping and sliding all the way to work while being hit in the face by ice?  Fun times. Summer, if you can hear me, I am ready for you to make your presence known.
